Counseling
The Counseling Department is your key for success, providing you with academic, career, transfer, personal and crisis counseling. Every student should meet with a counselor before registering. Meeting with a counselor gives you the opportunity to not only get your questions answered, but develop an educational plan that meets your specific needs and goals.
As a first Year student, please be sure to complete the First Semester Planning Session as this is a requirement for all First-Time college students to complete.
Do you have a quick question: Express Appointments are available and quick questions can be answered without the need to schedule an appointment, please use the counseling Virtual Lobby.
If you have chosen a major, a pathway counselor who specializes in your field of study will be able to best meet your requirements.
**If you are part of another program (i.e. ASC, EOPS, Umoja, Puente, or Athletics), you can choose to visit those counselors for that specific program by visiting the Student Support Hub at msjc.edu/hub.**
To prepare to meet with a counselor you will want to have a pencil and paper to write down important information or have a list of questions written down ahead of time to ask a Counselor. Here are some questions you could ask during your appointment:
- What classes should I take this semester?
- What classes do I need to take for my major?
- Will my AP classes from high school count as college credit?
- How do I prepare to transfer to a 4 year university?
- Will Financial aid be able to cover the cost?
- What do I do if I find the workload to be too much?
- I am undecided on my major, classes can I take?
