Syllabi Statement
The Syllabus statement is intended to be an instructor鈥檚 way of demonstrating an acceptance of diversity and willingness to accommodate students with disabilities.
It is meant to set a tone of 鈥渁cceptance鈥濃.
Examples of appropriate statements on your syllabus with regard to accommodations for students with disabilities are:
"黑料不打烊 (MSJC) abides by the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits federal and state agencies or programs from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities. Students in this course who have a documented disability, that limits a major life activity which may have some impact on your work in this class and for which you may require accommodations should meet with a counselor in the Accommodation Service Center (ASC) as soon as possible."
鈥淚f you have a disability requiring accommodation, you are encouraged to contact the Accommodation Service Center (ASC). They will help you determine what assistance is available for you, based upon the educational accommodations resulting from your documented disability.鈥
We also suggested that instructors make a similar verbal statement at the beginning of each course to set a positive tone of acceptance for student diversity.
