January 13 - February 13, 2025

Reception: Thursday, January 16, 4 - 6 pm

The MSJC Art Gallery, Rocks, a two person exhibition featuring artists Brad Eberhard and Robert Gunderman.  Eberhard will be showing new abstract ceramic sculptures and Gunderman will be showing a new series of paintings of oil paintings that mix natural forms and abstraction.  This is a wonderful chance to see the work of two long time Southern California artists.

Rocks Eberhard Gunderman

Rocks is a connecting idea that brings these two artists’ work together.  Brad Eberhard’s ceramics often take the shape of cairns.  He piles shapes in elegant teetering forms.  These forms echo natural forms and use natural glazes with hidden pops of colors.  Eberhard is known for his detailed abstract paintings and shifted to ceramics a few years ago.  His explorations of clay and glazes has a painterly quality that has echoes of the California ceramic masters like Peter Voulkos and German ceramicist Beate Kuhn.

Robert Gunderman is a painter who is often influenced by nature but reinterprets nature into beautiful forms that verge on abstraction.  For his newest series of river rock paintings he was inspired by the Sespe Creek behind his studio in Fillmore CA.  On his walks he would often focus on the ground and the river rocks.  These rocks can look like natural lines that meander through the canvas as a river meanders through the landscape or as an artist’s mind meanders through an image or idea.

Brad Eberhard received a MFA from Claremont Graduate University and a BA from Occidental College.  He has had solo shows at Susanne Vielmetter Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, Thomas Solomon Gallery, Los Angeles and the Peggy Phelps Callery, Claremont Graduate University.  His paintings are in the collections of Los Angeles, County Museum of Art, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and Pomona College Museum of Art.  He is currently the director and curator of Alto Beta Gallery in Altadena, CA

Robert Gunderman attended Otis Parsons School of Art.  He has had numerous solo exhibitions including Wilding Cran, Los Angeles, CA, Diane Rosenstein Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, Left Field, Los Osos, CA, AF Projects, Los Angeles, CA, there-there, Los Angeles, CA and Karen Lovegrove Gallery, Los Angeles, CA and Dan Bernier Gallery, Los Angeles, CA.  Gunderman is a retired Army veteran.  He was the owner/director of ACME Gallery in Los Angeles.
