Separate Connections
Online Launch Date: Monday, September 28, 2020 | Zoom conversation: Thursday, October 8, 1鈥2pm
The 黑料不打烊 Art Gallery is please to present Separate Connections, curated by Aaron Farley. Artist, curator and creative producer Aaron Farley has been capitalizing on our Covid-19 era to gather works of art from afar from an eclectic group of artists. His directions and methods are simple: he mails an artist a blank piece of paper, the artist then creates a work of art on or with the piece of paper and mails it back. What he has collected and what we are displaying is a kind of group sketchbook.
Artists submissions include: Erin Althea, Chantal Anderson, Laura Austin, Aaron Beckum, Nathan Bell, Christopher Bettig, Tim Biskup, David Black, Tanya Brodsky, Colin Burns, Scottie Cameron, Patrick Carey, Edward Cushenberry, Ramsey Dau, Timo Fahler, Luis Farfan, Erin Garcia, Daniel Gibson, Adi Goodrich, Julien Gross, Andrew Holder, Hannah Hooper, Jon Huck, Cody Hudson, Alvaro Ilizarbe, Aubrey Ingmar Manson, Ian James, Joel Jerome, Aaron Jupin, Mel Kadel, Jeff Kubasak, Thomas Linder, Bill Mcright, Joe McKay, Maxwell McMaster, Chris McPherson, Travis Millard, Dan Monick, Noe Montes, Brian Montouri, Christian Moreno, Brett Nicely, Breck Omar Brunson, Alaia Parhizi, Mark Read, Jon Seaton, Josh Schaedel, John Schlue, Nicholas Shake, Katie Shapiro, Lucien Shapiro, Daniel P Shubert, Jeremy Shockley, Emily Shur, Jill Spector, Mathew Sweezy, Jamie Tallerico, Aryo Toh Djojo, Phil Toselli, David Uzzardi, Cheyann Washington, Claire Weiss, Jeremy Weiss, Chris Wessman, and Marco Zamora.
In our changed online environment, we are all looking for ways to connect to people and as the world turns more digital, having a work of art arrive by mail brings with it a physical connection. Separate Connections explores our human impulses to connect and create with other artists. The works that Farley has collected range from Aaron Jupin鈥檚 photo realistic paintings of tomatoes shaped like a slipper, to Jeff Kubasak鈥檚 portrait of John Lewis, to Emily Shur鈥檚 photo collage and Timo Fahler鈥檚 dissections of the composition of 鈥淭he Inspiration of St. Mathew鈥 by Caravaggio. With each of these works there is a continuity of scale and a diverse assortment of styles. We hope that this exhibition is a glimpse into the lives of a group of artists who are connecting with each other and thus connecting with a world outside of our separated lives.
Born in Spokane, WA in 1975, Aaron received his BFA in photography and printmaking from Washington State University in 1998 and now lives with his wife and two children in Los Angeles, CA. Farley was a founding member and curator of the artist run gallery THIS LOS ANGELES in the neighborhood of Highland Park in LA. Along with the other partners, he co-curated over 30 shows and events including more than 200 artists in its short run from 2009-2012. He is also a featured artist in the book Milk and Honey - Contemporary Art in California from Ammo Books and was chosen as a 1st place finalist for his abstract photography in PDN magazine's The Curator Awards in 2012. He has had multiple exhibits in and around the US and he released his first book in 2017 which chronicles his Chromatic Reflections series.
