A Message of Unity

Dear MSJC Family,

As I was drafting my welcome back message for the start of the Spring 2021 semester, I am watching the national events unfold on the news. There is urgency for us at the Mt. San Jacinto Community College District to hold fast to what we are: a community.

We ended a tumultuous 2020 with a much-needed break. As we return in 2021, we find protestors at our nation's Capitol. These events are reverberating across the nation.

As an institution of higher education, we have adopted core competencies and values that focus on not only our personal and professional responsibility, but our civic responsibility as well. As educators and members of a learning organization, we are aware of the interconnectedness of global, national and local concerns and it is our responsibility to fully support our democracy and the democratic process. Our elected Board of Trustee members commit to an Oath of Office that affirms support of the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution and laws of the State of California of which they will faithfully and impartially perform and discharge the duties of their office.

I urge us all to remain committed to these values. We will likely see more protests in our nation this month. I ask that everyone proceed safely and responsibly. I also want to remind everyone that we are a model to others around us. Act with respect toward others, our democracy, and the law so that we act as leaders in our organization and our communities.

We are all one extended family brought together by our mission to serve our students and our communities. We have institutional values that remind us of our charge to support our students and each other.

I have every faith that we will emerge from this stronger. Transition is often painful, but together we will persist and celebrate our resiliency in getting through one of the toughest years on record. We also must be ready for the work ahead. I stand united with each and every one of you. I celebrate your resiliency and strength. And I am grateful for our Classified Professionals, Faculty, Administrators and Students. It is an honor to work along side each of you to put into action our college's vision for a better world through education.

Stay safe and be well,
Roger
