Ryan is a product of our rich community鈥攁 graduate of Hemet High School, he navigated higher education as a first-generation college student before joining our MSJC faculty in 2016. His scholarly background focuses on the intersection of poetics/poetic theory and queer studies, considering how our reading practices and the ways in which we have taught students to read poetry over the 20th have unintended consequences. More specifically, he is interested in mid-twentieth century American poetry and his work has centered on Frank O鈥橦ara. His article, 鈥淣ot You: Frank O鈥橦ara and the Poetics of 鈥楶ersonism鈥欌 appears in the international journal Textual Practice. His teaching background includes a wide array of courses within composition, and literature (such as early American Literature, Gender and Sexuality in Literature, and Multiethnic American Literature), as well as interdisciplinary classes in Gender and Sexuality Studies. At MSJC, he has served in many roles, including Co-Founder and Faculty Chair of the LGBTQ+ Advisory, Academic Senate Executive President, and Department Chair of English. When not working, he has a passion for cooking, true crime podcasts, British mystery books and series, and quiet nights at home with his husband and cats.
